Ivory Statues Seized at the Cairo International Airport
The Customs Department at Cairo International Airport announced that it had thwarted an attempt to smuggle a number of ivory statues into the country.
The figurines are made of internationally-traded "filament" ivory.
The Customs Department said that while completing the procedures for searching passengers from Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines plane in Terminal 3, the customs commissioner suspected a Hungarian passenger of Egyptian origin coming from Turkey.
By searching the passenger and his bags, it was found that there were 3 statues of different sizes and shapes hidden between the folds of clothes inside the passenger's bags.
And by presenting to the wildlife doctor the seized statues at the airport, the wildlife doctor stated that the statues were made of ivory, the ivory came from the tusks of an elephant which was criminally traded internationally, in violation of Environmental Law No. 4 of 1994, Law No. 9 of 2009 and Ministerial Resolution No. 1150 of 1999.
The Customs Administration decided to take legal measures and issue a seizure report against the passenger and seized the prohibited items.
